How leverage works

Same position, different margin

With leverage of 1:500, every 1 USD of margin controls up to 500 USD of position. One lot of EUR/USD is 100,000 euros, worth about $112,194; at 1:500 it needs about $224.39 of margin.

Leverage changes only the margin a position needs. The profit or loss per pip depends on the trade size, not on leverage. But because higher leverage lets you open larger positions with the same money, it can magnify losses as quickly as gains.

Margin for 1 lot of EUR/USD at each leverage
LeverageMargin for 1 lot EUR/USD
1:50$2,243.88
1:100$1,121.94
1:200$560.97
1:400$280.49
1:500$224.39
1:1,000$112.19
1:2,000$56.10

EUR/USD mid 1.12194 (live) · 1 lot = 100,000 EUR. Margin = 100,000 × price ÷ leverage.

Use leverage carefully

High leverage means a small price move can use up your margin quickly and trigger a stop out. Size positions so that a normal move against you does not threaten your account, use a stop loss, and never risk money you cannot afford to lose. You can lower your account leverage at any time when you have no open positions.

FAQ

Leverage and margin FAQ

More answers in the WoonFX help centre.

What is the maximum leverage at WoonFX?

Leverage up to the account maximum shown on this page is available on forex, metals, indices and energies. Stock and crypto CFDs have lower caps. Higher leverage means higher risk.

Can I change the leverage on my account?

Yes. You can change leverage in the client portal when the account has no open positions.

Does leverage change my profit or loss?

No. Leverage changes the margin a position needs, not its profit or loss per pip. A larger position, which leverage makes possible, does increase both potential profits and losses.

How do I calculate the margin for a trade?

Margin = lots × contract size × price × quote-to-USD rate ÷ leverage. For example, 1 lot of EUR/USD at 1.0850 with 1:500 leverage needs 100,000 × 1.0850 ÷ 500 = 217 USD.
